The Invisible Epidemic

Microplastics Are Inside
Every Home.

New research confirms: the average person ingests the equivalent of a credit card in microplastics every week. Most of it comes from inside their own home.

The Science

What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5mm — many invisible to the naked eye. They are shed constantly by synthetic materials as they degrade, flex, and abrade. Nanoplastics, under 1 micron, can cross cell membranes and the blood-brain barrier.

They have been found in human blood, lung tissue, placenta, breast milk, and most recently, in arterial plaque associated with cardiovascular events. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have detected them in the human brain.

The body burden is cumulative. Every week that passes in an unmodified environment adds to the total load. The ÖND approach is the only comprehensive interior design framework that systematically addresses every exposure pathway.

Hormonal Disruption

Plastic compounds including BPA, phthalates, and PFAS are endocrine disruptors linked to thyroid dysfunction, fertility impairment, and metabolic disease.

Chronic Inflammation

Microplastic particles in tissue trigger persistent inflammatory responses linked to autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative decline.

Neurological Impact

Nanoplastics detected in human brain tissue have been associated with cognitive impairment and mood dysregulation in emerging research.

Where Microplastics Hide in Your Home

Every room in a modern home contains multiple microplastic sources. Most are invisible, seemingly harmless materials you interact with daily.

Kitchen

  • Non-stick (PTFE/PFOA) cookware surfaces
  • Plastic food storage containers
  • Plastic cutting boards — especially worn ones
  • Coffee capsule machines
  • Plastic utensils heated during cooking
  • Plastic water filters releasing particles

Bedroom

  • Synthetic (polyester/nylon) bedding and pillows
  • Memory foam and synthetic mattresses
  • Polyester carpet and synthetic rugs
  • Laundry-washed synthetic clothing dust
  • Plastic blinds and window treatments

Living Room

  • Synthetic upholstery fabrics
  • Vinyl and laminate flooring off-gassing
  • Flame-retardant treated furniture foam
  • Electronic device casings and cables
  • PVC curtains and blinds

Bathroom

  • Plastic plumbing leaching into hot water
  • Synthetic shower curtains
  • Plastic-packaged personal care products
  • Microbeads in some exfoliants
  • Synthetic bathroom textiles

Laundry Room

  • Synthetic fabric shedding during washing
  • Up to 700,000 fibers released per wash cycle
  • Plastic laundry detergent packaging residue
  • Dryer exhaust without particle filtration

HVAC System

  • Plastic duct components off-gassing
  • Accumulated microplastic in air filters
  • Recirculated airborne plastic particles
  • Synthetic insulation fiber shedding
The ÖND Solution

Pillar III: Material Purity

The ÖND Method's Material Purity pillar is the most comprehensive microplastic elimination framework in residential design. Every surface, material, and finish is evaluated against clinical toxicology standards.

Material Vetting

Every material specification is reviewed against a database of 3,000+ compounds for off-gassing, microplastic shedding, and endocrine disruption potential.

Natural Substitutions

Every synthetic material in the ÖND method has a vetted natural alternative — from organic linen bedding to real hardwood flooring to glass and steel cookware.

Air Filtration

HEPA 14-grade whole-home air filtration removes 99.995% of particles above 0.1 microns — capturing airborne microplastic particles before they are inhaled.

Water Purification

Whole-home reverse osmosis and glass-only water contact points eliminate ingested microplastics from household water — the second largest domestic exposure pathway.
